[Blog] Join Section 6 Against Derby to Roar the Team On to a Win.
Written by CaughtInTheBrambles on Friday, 30th Oct 2009 14:16

Section 6 continues for the Derby game. We so sorely need a win, one way we can help the team achieve that is by making as much noise as possible. This is part of the aim of Section 6, but we still need more bodies.

Section 6 banner

We have become more visible, the cameras at the Newcastle game loved our Bobby two stick banners, but the banner display at that game was superb from many sections of the ground, the 'Thank you Bobby' cards in the upper tier looked superb as well on TV. Congratulations to all who created banners and flags for that game.

Our numbers have fluctuated this season, some of our mainstay singers are away at uni so cannot afford to make home games (oddly away games usually work out cheaper to attend), but as far as I know we have been represented at every game Ipswich have played this season.

The atmosphere in the Sir Bobby Robson Stand or North Stand if you prefer (I will abbreviate to SBRS) appears to be improving. I get the impression that the fact that performances are not being reflected in results and that many hardcore fans are still behind Roy Keane is starting to make people more amenable to singing. Or maybe it is the change of beer, whatever it is, there definitely is more noise coming from the rest of the SBRS lower

We should be augmented by the annual contingent of German fans tomorrow, they will be bringing approximately 40 to add their own songs and join in with us. With all that noise it should be one of the best Section 6 days yet, hopefully we can inspire the team to the win their performances of late deserve.

Section 6 is a fans group aiming to bring the atmosphere back to Portman Road and add colour to the ground, we sing ALL game and our repertoire of songs is expanding. We currently have the support of the club as they realise how important an effect atmosphere has on team performance on the pitch.

Where is Section 6? Section 6 is in the lower Sir Bobby Robson Stand right at the end next to the Cobbold Stand, you should hear us before you see us during a game. There is usually lots of room there, so if the incessant griping and endless misery of the fans around you start to annoy you and you would rather sing than listen to their inane drivel, come and join us.

If you want to book a match ticket in Section 6. Please do so, book a seat as far towards the wall as possible and towards the back.

No offence guys, great effort to get everyone going, and I appreciate what you r trying to do, but its loader in the centre as it always has been! Besides, it should be the whole ground chanting and getting behind the boys not just a small gathering in/called section 6!

Agree. It's great to see such an effort, but trying to manufacture an atmosphere will never work in the long term.

We are aware that the centre is where it should be, but let's face it it has been really silent there for a season or two, the only sounds being the constant whinging.

Section 6 is not manufactured, it is a supporter led attempt to INSPIRE other people to sing in the stand by example. The area was chosen because it is the only place in the stand that has enough spare seats to allow singers to congregate. In truth nowhere in the lower part of the Sir Bobby stand (or North Stand whichever) is actually conducive to singing, the club tacitly accept that as the acoustics are terrible, but since it is unlikely that the hardcore will pay more to move upstairs where the acoustics are far better, we have to make do.

The noise needs to be coming from everywhere, not just section 6!

I hope S6 works because over the last few seasons the atmosphere has been woefull. I take my son 10 and he has grown up with my stories of the old days. But I find it hard to answer him when he says why is it so quiet. He is used to seeing Esbjerg play infront of 6-10 thousend....it's embarrassing.I admit We havn't got over this season but is it any better.

If Portman Rd turned down the volume of music pre-match, after a goal and at half time I might consider going back.

Brazil - ever heard of ear plugs lol what a ridiculous reason not to go to football.

I do go - not often to PR because I live in Yorkshire. The music is incredibly annoying to me and has to be the loudest in the division. It's ruined any pre-match atmosphere.

After a request by Section 6 the music has been turned down in the Lower North, you can at least hear yourself think there and this season it has been known that the singing started before kick off.

Well played Mr.Section 6, its far too easy to criticise and come out with the hilarious "half term" gags, but at least you boys are doing something about it. People that moan about the atmosphere but aren't prepared to sing themselves are a bit strange. Ignore the idiots on here that knock you, keep up the good work!!

I sit in Section Six, and to be Honest after about Five minutes of four or five people singing it becomes more of an annouying noise.

What has half term got to do with anything, it's a Saturday and they're there every Saturday... some quieter than others. They aren't even all school age and what does it matter what age they are anyway? I think it's great that they are trying to encourage the crowd to be positive and encourage the players, it's a shame the rest of the supposedly 'hard core' fans in the Sir Bobby stand can't do the same. Well done Section 6, hope it's a good turn out for you tomorrow!!

Attacking section6 is very harsh. They are doing their best to try and get the crowd going - we certainly need some encouragement. Can hear them in upper SBRS. And why cant the other stands start their own singing?? The only time we can hear enything from South Stand is when there is a party of school kids in! Lets support together.

Good effort lads, I listen to your work from the Upper North, my mates I go with are old and make me sit there. To those who mock S6 I say, as an away supporter, one of my fav chants is "football in a libary do do do!" at some of the quieter grounds we visit. However I always get lost in the irony of singing it when I think of the "cauldron" atmosphere we create on a regualar basis................... so fair play to those that give it a vocal go at PR

Some of you lot need to have a word with yourselves.

Having a pop at section six is possibly one of the most disgraceful things i've heard from the online fickle fans of ipswich for a long time.
S6, your doing a great job and well done for trying to recruit. Ignore these pillocks, unfortunately i cannot join you as i have a season ticket elsewhere in the ground but i'll keep an eye out for you guys tomorrow.

Section 6 has always seemed a bit of a joke to me. You can't hear it as the center is louder, from what i've heard there have just been foul mouthed youths there who swear at Ipswich supporters they don't agree with.

But I'm probally wrong, good luck with whatever you're doing..

CaughtInTheBrambles added 01:28 - Oct 31
GarvanisGod you cannot hear it, just as we cannot hear any noise coming from the centre, but then I am told and in my pre section 6 days experienced the fact that there is very little noise created there (although I am told it seems to be improving) The design of the lower tier means there is no reverberation and no resonance so therefore the noise does not carry.

Section 6 are doing their best and good luck to them. As Danish Blue says above, 8,000 or so fans at a place like Esbjerg make far more noise than we do at PR. All the restrictions (on hanging up flags, standing etc.) make it more difficult these days to create atmosphere in many British grounds, so I don't think we're alone in this. But a concerted effort from the supporters, perhaps liaising with the club so you get some slack on what you can do, is probably the way to go. It's not just a question of singing. I would love to witness a sea of flags or some other imaginative display before the game starts. But this kind of thing needs a lot of commitment and organisation from those involved. Here in Sweden, for example, they are light years ahead of us in this respect, even with much smaller crowds. If S6 can work towards a better atmosphere, they certainly get my support.

would be nice to hear 20,000 singing 'my way' as a real tribute to sir Bob today and every home game, perhaps S6 could lead the way :-)

These lads do a great job and yes we need the entire ground to join in. When the middle and, lets not forget the left side , yes the left side over there, drop off they tend to rest a minute or two thne they all come back togetehr. BUT the rest of the ground need to join in. Should we print an A5 song sheet for the other stands?

Totally agree with Brazil about the music before games and after goals. I used to love the pre game atmosphere but now can't stand Robbie Williams et al played so loud I can't even talk to my Dad.
It's not S6 who should be critisised for trying to manufacture atmosphere - they are fighting on our behalf to get it back. It's the club with their dumb research into atmosphere creation at USA events who should be blamed.

Have there been any articles published about our German friends who visited yesterday? I gather they are followers of Fortuna Dusseldorf? Anyone know the story behind them cheering on the town?
